"God did not call the equipped, but he equipped the called"

"God planted seed"
In August 1987 I met my first deaf friend and began learning ASL... she moved 4 months later, I never saw her again.

"God will make a way"
December 1989 my twin sister shares about Jesus and that He saved her life-He did! She told me to go to Cornerstone Church and listen. (I was still Catholic, and empty inside) however, I heard Pastor Hagee and accepted Jesus as my Savior.

“God works in mysterious ways”
In 1990 Cornerstone begain a Deaf Ministry and Sign classes were offered. I was in the very first class and there I realized that God planted seed! How? He used my deaf friend…. To learn ASL. He used my sister and Pastor Hagee to show me the way and follow Christ, and He used the sign classes / Deaf Ministry to plant my feet and watch me grow in Christ… and with the love and compassion for the Deaf. I am now certified both as an Oral / Sign Interpreter and everything I am… I owe to Jesus!

In the late 1990’s I was going to school in an interpreter-training program. At the same time I was involved in the deaf ministry at my church. I was very involved in the Deaf Community. I interpreted at church and cell group. I went bowling on Monday nights to talk to the women while the men bowled and I went to a Deaf Club on Friday nights for fellowship with adults of different ages. In May of 1997 I graduated from school and moved in July to San Antonio. We immediately started to search for a church home. Of course, I wanted a church that also had a Deaf Ministry.

We used to watch Pastor Hagee on TV and decided to go to Cornerstone. First, I called the church and found a Home Ministry in our neighborhood. Then one Sunday morning, we set our to find the church. Our first morning there, I noticed Monica, so I introduced myself. She said that Teresa was the leader and gave me her home telephone number. So, I called Teresa, introducted myself and said that I wanted to be a part of the Deaf Ministry, if she would have me. In the following weeks, I introduced myself to other people, including Betty, Noemi, Terri and deaf congregants. I took Teresa’s class on Tuesday nights and received my certificate of completion. I prayed and waited. Finally, Terry asked me to fill our an application and I became “official”. I have been “around” ever since.

I started coming to Cornerstone Church in 1989, at my father’s request. Little did I know, that my Heavenly Father, had much bigger plans. In 1990, I took my first “beginning” sign language class and I quickly fell in love with the language, the culture and the deaf. During the class, I joined the Deaf Ministry and continued serving wherever I could. In 1994, I went to the Ladies Bible Study, and while being prayed over, the Leader said I was “birthing something” and a “a heavy anointing” was on my life. At the time, I had just had our first daughter, and didn’t understand.

Soon, after, I was allowed to interpret more in church, mainly music and I began to struggle with pride and left the ministry. I believe God tied my hands for a year, to help me grow and realize the skills He had given me, were His, and that serving in the Ministry, was not about me, but about Him. As I slowly repented and matured, I returned to the Ladies Bible Study. As we drove, my mother encouraged me to go back to the ministry, reminding me that I should be “feeding God’s sheep”. When we arrived, a prophetic speaker happend to be teaching that day. At the end of the class, she walked behind me and touched my shoulder, her words….His words, rang loud and clear, “you are anointed to feed my sheep”. I rejoined the ministry, and His skill, in me, seemed to be stronger than ever. I am now a Certified Sign and Oral Interpreter. I’ve been serving in Deaf Ministry for over 14 years, and like the song says…”in all I do, I honor You…” I thank the Lord for the honor of serving Him.

I have been a member of Cornerstone Church for almost 14 years. A few years after becoming a member of the church, I was serving in the Sanctuary Choir and came in contact with the person in charge of the Deaf Ministry. At the time, I was teaching regular education and was about to transfer to the Deaf Education Department of the school district. I decided to take the sign language class being offered at the church to improve my sign language skills, since I had not signed in several years. I did not know ASL very well because I had learned Signed Exact English, so my main purpose was improvement, not to become a sign language interpreter for the church.

During the second session of the sign language classes, all attendees were asked to practice oral interpreting. A few days later, I was called on to do oral interpreting during the Sunday church service for an oral deaf person who wanted to start coming to Cornerstone Church. I agreed to do it and became an oral interpreter for the Deaf Ministry. I was happy to further serve the Lord in addition to being in the Sanctuary Choir. I continued as an oral interpreter for a few years, but then left the ministry to concentrate on my ministry in the choir.

A few months ago, I was approached to re-join the Deaf Ministry as an oral interpreter. I was no longer in the choir and so God put me in the right place and at the right time to be called back into the ministry as an oral interpreter. There was a need that I felt God was calling me to fulfill. I am blessed to serve the Lord in this way. He is an awesome God who provides for the needs of all His children, whether as the server or the receiver. But when you serve, you also receive. I thank the Lord for all He does for me out of His abundant love.
